چکیده
The optical response of hierarchical materials is convoluted, which hinders their direct study and property control. Transparent wood (TW) an emerging biocomposite in this category, adds function to the structural properties wood. Nano- microscale inhomogeneities composition, structure at interfaces strongly affect light transmission haze. While interface manipulation can tailor TW properties, realization optically clear requires detailed understanding light-TW interaction mechanisms. Here we show how material scattering absorption coefficients be extracted from a combination experimental spectroscopic measurements photon diffusion model. Contributions different length scales thus deciphered quantified. It shown that forward dominates haze TW, primarily caused by refractive index mismatch between substrate polymer phase. Rayleigh cell wall residual lignin have minor effects on transmittance, but former affects Results provide guidance for design transparent composites towards desired functionality; demonstrate experimentally transmittance controlled over broad range.

Nanotwin-governed toughening mechanism in hierarchically structured biological materials
As a natural biocomposite, Strombus gigas, commonly known as the giant pink queen conch shell, exhibits outstanding mechanical properties, especially a high fracture toughness. It is known that the basic building block of conch shell contains a high density of growth twins with average thickness of several nanometres, but their effects on the mechanical properties of the shell remain mysterious...

Volume absorption is a crucial factor to the appearance of transparent objects such as colored glass and liquids. Due to the involvement of the spectral absorptivities of materials and path lengths of lights, volume absorption can generate interesting color variations. In this paper, we model volume absorption for homogeneous transparent materials using Bouguer-Lambertian law, and render its ph...
متن کاملHarnessing light to create defect-free, hierarchically structured polymeric materials.
Computer simulations reveal how photoinduced chemical reactions in polymeric mixtures can be exploited to create long-range order in materials with features that range from the submicron to the nanoscale. The process is initiated by shining a spatially uniform light on a photosensitive AB binary blend, which thereby undergoes both a reversible chemical reaction and a phase separation. When a we...
متن کاملHierarchically structured functional materials: Synthesis strategies for multimodal porous networks*
Hierarchically porous materials displaying multimodal pore sizes are desirable for their improved flow performance coupled with high surface areas. In the last five years, a tremendous amount of research has focused upon the synthesis and applications of hierarchically porous materials. This review aims to open up a new avenue of research in this exciting field. At first, recent progress in the...
